Decades ago, someone published a biography of New York entitled Maximum City.
What is a maximum city? I don’t think it comes from size alone, or even the pace and concentration of development.
I think it’s about energy and activity. A maximum city is kinetic. It keeps moving, changing, as its different areas evolve, progress and sometimes decline.
Last month, there was a BBC news item about whether Manchester had earned the status of England’s second city. This is a potentially contentious title (if you’re a Brummie). But does it really matter anyway?
Why should Manchester want the accolade of being second to London when it has a character and history all of its own? Whether or not it’s the second city, it’s certainly a maximum one.
Our choice of Patn Fest venue, Fairfield Social Club, is evidence of this. Adjacent to Angel Meadow, it’s in yet another part of the city that has evolved significantly and dramatically in recent years.
That maximum city energy is something we try to tap into with our placemaking festival — a buzz of ideas and activity underpinned by consciousness and consideration of place.
You can experience it for yourself on Wednesday 17 June.
